Director Brandon Hemsley invited me to shoot and help conceptualize a project he was creating with a talented creative team in the BYU Adlab. Brandon and I have collaborated on many projects in the past, so I was excited to jump in and contribute so early in the process!

I love working with Brandon because he is very thorough with his director's prep and this allows for sharper creativity through multiple iterations of ideas. A concept is always evolving and its success is proportional to how much time the team has to "work the idea" and get the kinks out before production.
On this project, not only did we storyboard to figure out our best shots, but Brandon and I actually shot an animatic of the whole piece (see below) that enabled us to experiment with different cutting structures and transitions. This made production laser focused and very efficient!

Post-production is bringing together all the work that's gone before. It's really easy to have a project leave most of its potential on the cutting room floor. What I love about working with the Hemsley brothers is that they are willing to microscope every frame -- to really hustle to get the best version into the final. Check us out, doing a VFX review session, playing with laser pointers!
COLOR CORRECTION
A DP really needs a great Colorist to make his work shine, which brings us to the excellent Drew Tekulve. Here is a clip of Drew explaining the layers that go into polishing a SINGLE shot.
